Choosing earrings for a child
Children’s earrings have to clear three bars that adult earrings don’t: they have to be small and light enough not to weigh on a child’s earlobe, they have to use a closure mechanism that won’t fall out at school or pull through the piercing if grabbed, and they have to be in a metal that won’t trigger a reaction. Sapphire Sorbet’s kids’ range is built around those three constraints.
Screw backs vs push backs vs hooks
Screw backs: our default for ages 1–8. The threaded post and back lock together — extremely secure, won’t fall out during sport or sleep. Slightly slower to put on.
Push backs (with safety lock): for ages 8+. Easier to put on, secure when properly seated.
Hooks: not recommended below age 12 — too easy to catch and tear.
If you’re unsure, choose screw backs. We can fit any of our kids’ earring designs with screw backs at no extra cost.
Gold purity and skin safety
For pierced ears, we recommend 18K gold (75% pure) over 14K. The lower copper content reduces any chance of skin reaction. All our earrings are nickel-free by composition — we don’t use white gold alloyed with nickel for any kids’ piece.
Designs
Classic studs: small singles, pairs, and floral clusters — the everyday choice
Hoops: small huggie-style hoops in 8mm and 10mm
Character motifs: Butterfly, birdie, cupcakes, flower — fun pieces for first earrings
First piercing pieces
For a first piercing (typically at karna vedha, 6 weeks to 6 months), we recommend the smallest plain 18K gold studs (3mm or under) with screw backs. The first earrings should stay in for at least six weeks — choose something simple that won’t snag.
